I believe learning to care for yourself is one of the most important steps we can take, and I’m glad you’re exploring what you need right now. Therapy can provide structure and support to build self-understanding, compassion, stronger relationships, and confidence. Being a student creates many opportunities for introspection and transition. I have multiple years of experience working with undergrad and graduate students and I deeply enjoy supporting students in building insight into themselves and learning how to address acculturation stress, setting boundaries, competing demands, academic difficulties, and relationship concerns. Being a student is one facet of your identity and I aim to create an environment that is culturally responsive and appreciates the other identities that make up your lived experience, such as being a first-gen or international student, or identifying as disabled, LGBTQIA+, or neurodiverse, etc. I also have experience helping students manage feelings of anxiety, depression, or symptoms of trauma and burnout. Sessions often include space to explore and build awareness as well as being introduced to concrete skills to help you navigate stressors and difficult situations. I utilize cognitive-behavioral, somatic, interpersonal, and Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) interventions to support students.

I center my approach on an unwavering commitment to clients, emphasizing warmth, compassion, positivity, and empathy, which fosters quick and meaningful connections. My primary goal is to offer client a safe space to learn, grow and experience life in more positive and healthy ways, while cultivating the desired changes that bring them into therapy. I enjoy positively helping couples with their relationships. Being trusted with the opportunity to help them get along better, communicate better, and last long term is one of the experiences I find so rewarding in my work. With individuals I like to help them find the answers they are looking for, delving into the past to find the connection to today’s reactivity and behaviors. I work to create a secure space for clients to explore the dynamics of their relationships, and situations actively engaging with both individuals and couples to unravel how their past experiences influence their present and future.

Young adulthood can be both exciting and overwhelming—full of choices, change, and uncertainty. Whether you're graduating from school or navigating college, starting your career, facing relationship challenges, or feeling stuck, anxious, or down, therapy can be a grounding space to sort through it all. I understand the complex stressors that come with early adult life, and I am deeply passionate about supporting adults navigating a range of emotional and psychological challenges, such as anxiety, depression, life transitions, academic concerns, relationship troubles, and grief. My therapeutic style is compassionate and empathetic—I work to create a safe, supportive environment where you feel seen and heard. I also believe in the importance of being direct and gently challenging when needed, to help you grow and move toward meaningful change. I tailor my work to meet your unique goals and with respect to your lived experience.

Are you constantly feeling overwhelmed, anxious, or like you are falling behind no matter how much you achieve? Many of my clients are students and young professionals who appear successful on the outside but are silently struggling with burnout, anxiety, and pressure to be perfect. I help individuals break the cycle of overfunctioning, manage anxiety, and recover from the emotional weight of high expectations; whether academic, cultural, or personal. You don’t have to keep holding everything together alone. Therapy is a space to slow down, understand what is driving these patterns, and learn healthier ways to cope so you can feel more balanced, grounded, and at peace.

Students who come to work with me often share some things in common: -They're high-achievers. Driven, capable, and holding it together on the outside, but quietly exhausted, burned out, or feeling like something's missing on the inside. -They might be navigating anxiety or OCD, going through a major life transition, or questioning their purpose and what comes next. They may be working through shifts in their relationships, with a partner, with their parents, or with themselves. -Many have never asked for help before. They're used to being the one who has it together, and reaching out takes real courage for them. If any of that sounds familiar, reach out for a free 20-minute consultation and let's get started together :)

Relief and hope can grow from psychotherapy - lasting effects of nonjudgment, trust and stable support from another. Learning to talk through issues can lead to the development of your own unique voice - intrapersonally and with others - spur creative ways to address problems, and result in new or greater insight and a deeper understanding of feelings and needs.

Hello! My name is Kalea Abernathy. I am a Licensed Professional Counselor. I received my Bachelor of Science in Psychology with a concentration in Clinical and Counseling from Colorado State University and my Master of Arts in Counseling at Northwestern University. I specialize in working with children, adolescents, and their families. I believe that the key aspects of counseling are empathy, collaboration, and unconditional positive regard. With these foundational pieces, I work with my clients to create a trusting therapeutic relationship where individuals feel safe to process their past and present and feel empowered to achieve their goals.I have experience helping individuals address complex trauma, post traumatic stress, anxiety, depression, OCD, ADHD, and ODD. I integrate multiple lenses such as dialectical behavior therapy, cognitive behavior therapy, person-centered, and psychodynamic to better help and understand my clients. Before working at Hartman Counseling and Consulting, I worked with adults at The Family Institute at Northwestern University, helping individuals work through grief and loss and mood disorders, and at The Bridge Youth and Family Services where I worked with children, adolescents, and their families who were experiencing anxiety, depression, post traumatic stress, and behavioral difficulties
