We specialize in cultivating close, long-term therapeutic relationships with diverse and underrepresented populations, such as those from creative subcultures, intersecting minority identities, and non-traditional lifestyles and identities. Each one of us has a different psychotherapy style, and we do not use just one therapeutic modality. We prioritize ongoing learning and exploration of our own mental processes, in conjunction with learning traditional evidence-based psychotherapies. I have experience working with anxiety, depression, childhood and relational trauma, identity issues, job stress, relationship issues, and life transitions. I have worked with with teenagers and adults, as well as first-generation immigrants, BIPOC, and LGBTQ+ folks. As a South Asian woman who is a first generation immigrant, I value exploring with clients how their identity and culture shapes their experience. In my work with clients I utilize a trauma informed lens as well as a holistic approach, focusing on the mind body connection and how our mental health and physical health are intertwined. I utilize various modalities in my work, primarily psychodynamic but also aspects of DBT, CBT, ACT and mindfulness techniques. I am a warm, compassionate therapist who strives to create a non-judgmental, safe space where clients can explore their past, better understand themselves, navigate life challenges and work towards well-being and self acceptance. Frances is an autistic/neurodivergent, nonbinary and queer, disabled Taiwanese and Chinese immigrant. Frances works through an integrated person centered, trauma informed, relational, and feminist framework where they meet the client where they are at and co-designs the therapeutic space with clients to allow clients to be able to bring their whole selves in. They approach therapy from the fundamental belief that mental health symptoms are 1. responses to needs not being met and are indicators of larger systemic issues such as surviving under capitalism, living through the climate crisis, and resisting genocidal systems, and 2. differences that have been pathologized by a society that places a human’s worth on their productivity. A person's healing isn't linear and cannot be done in isolation without addressing these existing power structures and institutions. Therefore, Frances works from the perspective that mental health clinicians need to be advocates for systemic change, and is consistently advocating for mental health services to be more accessible for marginalized communities. Frances received their EdM and MA in Counseling Psychology at Teachers College Columbia University. Their previous training included working on an ACT (Assertive Community Treatment) team at the Bridge NY, where they were part of a mobile multidisciplinary treatment team that addressed clients who have fallen out of traditional mental healthcare and experience serious mental health conditions such as schizophrenia/schizoaffective disorder, bipolar disorder, substance use disorders, etc. Frances also has a background of working in NY politics and advocacy at a social services nonprofit, where they mobilized AAPI (Asian American Pacific Islander), low income, and immigrant communities to build political power.
Adolescence and adulthood can be exciting and overwhelming. Navigating academic pressures, identity exploration, relationship challenges, or major life transitions can be daunting to tackle on your own. I specialize in supporting adolescents, young adults, and their families as they face anxiety, depression, trauma, identity concerns, and the stress of achievement and belonging. My experience working as an assistant dean of admission at Princeton University, coupled with my counseling experience at Princeton’s counseling and psychological center, and working in an independent K-12 school, has informed my deep understanding of the pressures students and families face in academic, social, and developmental spaces. In therapy, we’ll explore moments of vulnerability and discomfort that can contribute to self-doubt and isolation. I work collaboratively with individuals and families to uncover ways to strengthen communication and bring clarity to relational dynamics. My goal is to create an affirming space rooted in empathy and cultural humility, where you develop tools towards empowerment and rediscover your authentic self. I take an integrative and trauma-informed approach, grounded in person-centered, culturally responsive, and strength-based care. I draw from CBT with a multicultural and feminist lens, working with individuals from diverse backgrounds who may be navigating their gender and sexuality, cultural, and intersectional identities. I am dual board certified psychiatrist trained at New York Medical College and Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai Hospital. I also have expertise and experience in diagnosing and treating wide range of mental health issues including ADHD, anxiety, depression, stress, insomnia, evaluation for need for accommodation and disability, OCD, academic and cultural stress, relationship and adjustment issues, weight management. Alex Straaik, MA, MS, PMHNP-BC (She/Her) is a board certified psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner specializing in psychopharmacology. Ms. Straaik has a diverse academic background, including a Master of Science from The Ohio State University, and a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Writing, Literature, and Publishing and a Master of Arts in Writing and Publishing from Emerson College. She is extremely passionate about providing empathetic and empowering care that respects and values our unique life experiences and truths. Ms. Straaik takes a collaborative, intersectional, and person-centered approach, mindfully crafting a safe and supportive space for all. She worked as the sole psychiatric provider on an Assertive Community Treatment (ACT) team, where she provided psychiatric evaluations, medication management, and psychoeducation to underserved individuals with severe and persistent mental illness, as well as at an outpatient community mental health center treating a wide array of disorders related to anxiety, mood, psychosis, and trauma. Ms. Straaik is an LGBTQ+ affirming provider with training and experience working with the community and is deeply committed to providing culturally and structurally competent care. In her free time, she enjoys all things literary, studying Spanish, and exploring the great outdoors.
